Description: As a scavenger, the vulture is acutely aware of its surroundings and uses its sharp perception to survive.
Story from behind the lens: The cape buffalo had perhaps died of natural causes over night and in the course of less than 24hours (when we had last been here) had been consumed by the vultures alone. The lions were in a patch close by, busy in active courtship and had not noticed the dead buffalo. Or, the carcass would not have been intact and in-situ. As we were photographing the scene, the lions noticed the commotion and come down to investigate. As most of the vultures cleared the way for the King of the Jungle, this last one took flight and I was in position.
