Description: Older male buffalo standing alone

Story from behind the lens: While out on our safari drives, every so often we would come across a solitary older male buffalo standing in a small mud pit or wallow. I asked my guide Jonathan about these males, and he told me they were Dagga boys - Dagga meaning “mud”. These Buffalo are the ones that have been forced out of the herd by the younger ones. He went on to tell me that the Dagga boys are the ones that earned the buffalo species its name on the Big Five list because of their short temper and aggressiveness. Well not an uncommon species in the Mara, to see an old Dagga boy standing proud with ragged ears, etched horns and a firm look is truly a sight to behold.
