Description: A confused Elephant in Musth, wandering around in circles, digging with his giant feet, as he repeats himself. Weeping from it's head, it commanded attention of a nearby herd, attempting dominance!
Story from behind the lens: In the vast natural habitat of the Maasai Mara, we drove along the open plains, and a magnificent giant roamed upon the horizon. This elephant bull commanded attention as it wandered around in circles, almost as if it was patrolling. Its presence was particularly notable as it stayed close to a nearby herd; still keeping distance.
Moreover, the mud beneath its gigantic feet had been disturbed, revealing signs of digging. Bits of mud flew through the air as the bull forcefully expelled it from its trunk; leaving a clear indication of its recent musth period. Hence, it’s unpredictable behaviour.
In addition, musth means the bull practically poisons itself with the excess of testosterone coursing through its veins, and pouring out its head; as if it is crying. As observers, a mix of emotions were felt; both incredible and concerning to witness this display of power and vulnerability. The bull's visible musth made it abundantly clear to us, as well as the females nearby! So clear we could even see it on the horizon, from where our vehicle sat.
In conclusion, encountering this giant bull on the horizon was an unforgettable experience! Overall, a great testament to the incredible biodiversity here in the Maasai Mara!
