Description: The cubs watched from a safe place as their mother, Risasi, saw off a female lion.

Story from behind the lens: We came across this cheetah family as they were tucking into a kill but whilst we were the only vehicle (except the rangers) we weren't the only spectators - despite Risasi's very vocal warnings, a large female lion was advancing closer. A thrilling scene ensued with the cheetah chasing the much larger cat away. Meanwhile, her three cubs fled to a safe spot and watched their mother in action. You can still see the blood on the face of the cub looking directly at the camera, having been disturbed mid-meal. At the time this image was taken at the end of last year, these three were the only young cheetah cubs in the Mara.
